Charles Shreve Braddock, Jr. 1863-1917 Charles Braddock, Jr., M.D. practiced in Haddonfield. He helped to organize the New Jersey Naval Reserves and served in the Navy during the Spanish American War - in the Battle of Santiago and in the final battle at Manzanillo. In 1903 Dr. Braddock became the director of the Royal Vaccine and Bacteriological Laboratory in Siam, where he developed a "heat-resistant" smallpox vaccine for Siam's climate and fought cholera, bubonic plague, malaria, and other tropical diseases. In 1906 he became chief medical inspector. After suffering from the very diseases he was combating, he returned to Haddonfield. In 1907 he was awarded the Order of the Crown of Siam, Fourth Class (also known as the Order of the White Elephant). Dr. Braddock next became medical examiner for the Interborough Rapid Transit Company in New York City. He continued to publish articles on tropical diseases and and to work toward their prevention. |
