Uterine Fibroids

This AP radiograph of the pelvis reveals a large popcorn-like calcification which represents calcified uterine leiomyomata (fibroids). Fibroids occur in at least 20-30% of women of reproductive age. They may be asymptomatic or they may be associated with pelvic or back pain, urinary frequency or incontinence, hypermenorrhea, infertility. or spontaneous abortions. Ultrasonography frequently may be used for initial evaluation of the pelvic organs or, in a case such as this, to confirm and further evaluate findings demonstrated by conventional radiography.
