Overview   |   Schedules   |   Benefit Information

The Plastic Surgery Residency Program is approved for two years of residency training at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center. Over the course of the two years of training, a resident can expect to be involved in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Except for two rotations to institutions in nearby Philadelpha, for burn care mangement (acute and chronic) at St. Agnes Medical Center and craniofacial surgery at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, all clinical work is at Cooper Hospital.

A full-time faculty of three plastic surgeons assures the resident of close supervision when required and the opportunity for graded responsibility and independence throughout the training program, both in the operating room and in the outpatient ambulatory facility.

There are two weekly didactic conferences discussing preoperative management of patients, morbidity and mortality review, journal reviews, and topical presentations by other faculty members at the medical center. In addition, there are monthly conferences reviewing maxillofacial trauma, a weekly breast-care conference, and a biweekly craniofacial conference.

Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center is one of the major trauma centers in the state of New jersey, covering the seven southern counties of the state. There is a Level III Intensive Care Nursery at this institution. We also have the largest state-supported Craniofacial/Cleft Palate Program in New Jersey, with more than 700 active patients. A research laboratory is available, adjacent to the hospital.

Applicants must have prerequisite training acceptable to the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Applicants must apply through the Plastic Surgery Central Application Program (326 East Coronado Road, Phoenix, AZ 85004). In addition, an application form for Graduate Medical Education at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center must be completed.

The plastic surgery resident is expected to be on call every other night, but calls may be taken from home if the clinical situation warrants.
