Student Evaluation

The New Brunswick/Piscataway and Camden campuses have the same grading policy for the Psychiatry Clerkship program.  Listed below is specific information pertaining to the Clerkship grading policy:

  1. The final grade is calculated by using the following percentages:

NBME board exam - 45%
Clinical performance - 35%
OSCE - 20%

  1. The passing grade for the board exam is 65.
  2. The OSCE is graded as Pass/Fail and consists of 2 patient interview stations and 2 post note stations.
  3. In order to receive HONORS, a student must receive a final overall grade of 90 or better, AND 80 or greater on the Board examination AND meet professional conduct expectations.
  4. In order to receive HIGH PASS, a student must receive a final overall grade of 85-89, AND 65 or greater on the Board examination AND meet professional conduct expectations.
  5. In order to receive PASS, a student must receive a final grade of 70-84, AND 65 or greater on the Board examination and meet professional conduct expectations.
  6. A student will receive CONDITIONAL PASS for the clerkship if the final overall grade is between 60-69 and/or the Board examination is less than 65.
  7. FAILURE of the clerkship, which must be remediated, will result if a student:
  • Receives an overall final grade of 59 or less and/or
  • Does not meet professional conduct expectations of the clerkship
  1. Remediation:
  • If a student receives an overall final grade of 60-69 (Conditional Pass) for the clerkship, he/she will be required to do remediation as determined by the Clerkship Director.  This remediation may include clinical duties, an examination, both clinical duties and an exam, or other specific programs.  Successful remediation, resulting in a final overall grade of 70 or better, will be graded as a Pass, the maximum grade that can be achieved on remediation of a Conditional Pass.
  • If a student receives an overall final grade of Conditional Pass because of his/her performance on the NBME written examination, he/she will be permitted to retake the exam one time.  If the student does well on the retake (65 or better) and subsequently achieves an overall final grade of 70 or better, he/she will then receive a Pass, the maximum grade that can be achieved on remediation of a Conditional Pass.  If on the retake, a student scores less than 65, he/she will receive a final overall grade of Fail and be required to repeat the clerkship.
  • If a student receives an overall final grade of Fail (59 or below) for the clerkship, he/she will be required to repeat the entire clerkship.
  • If a student does not meet all clerkship expectations for professional conduct, he/she will receive a grade of Fail for the clerkship, regardless of performance in other areas, and will be required to repeat the clerkship.
  1. Grade appeals must be made to the Course Director via written request within one month after the release of the final grades for the rotation.  Further appeals may be made to the Director of Medical Student Education in the Department and final appeals to the Vice Chair for Education & Training for the Department.
